RuneScape Riots: Referral Program

Edit: Hey, I’ve gotten permission to post this on RuneScapetimes.com everyone :)

Alright, here’s an essay on what’s upsetting everyone.

To Jagex:

I think the main reasoning behind not supporting the Refer-A-Friend program is that RuneScape was never a game where these programs would have seemed to fit. Whereas games like WoW have had microtransactions, bonus experience, etc, for awhile, RuneScape was always a game of everyone on the same level. No benefits. No bonuses. No rewards.

None of these changes in themselves are that big of a deal. Sure, they’ll get players upset to see a new marketing direction, however, it’s not any one particular change. It’s the combination. Stuff like Bonus XP Weekends, Ornate Katanas, the Loyalty Program, the new Referral Program, the huge increase of botting, return of Free Trade and Wilderness, and etc.

Old habits die hard. Your marketing strategy has changed so much, so quickly, that the players that have been loyal for years have trouble keeping up. RuneScape was always a game that was spread through word of mouth. Obviously, that is not working as well as it used to, and a solid advertising program is now needed. This can be blamed in fault as much to the players as much as to Jagex.

To the Player:

These riots don’t do anything to benefit either side. Construct feedback. Post reasoning. Show that you’re unhappy with the direction the game is headed, but do it in a beneficial way. Rioting just makes everyone involved look like a bunch of kids throwing a temper tantrum.

Please though, keep in mind that this is a new Jagex: a new marketing strategy, and one that is in use pretty much industry wide. Sure, it may not seem like one that Jagex would have bought into years ago, but this is a different environment. Word of mouth referrals aren’t working. People are leaving RuneScape, and there has to be some way of getting traffic back. If you don’t like the current methods, offer an alternative. Jagex may just take it up instead.

To Everyone:

The program may be good. It may be bad. At this point, it’s too early to tell. Hold back your judgement, and tell me two, three, six months down the road what your opinion is on it. Has it drastically harmed RuneScape? The answer will probably surprise you.

These programs are not the core of the game. The content is. Yet this year, through all of the problems Jagex had with player relationships in marketing strategies, they have by far made up with one of the best years of content — this month especially, with ABSOLUTELY STUNNING graphic changes across half of the RuneScape world, a new quest in an amazing series, and awesome minigame updates. Overall, the content is what keeps me playing or makes me leave, and let me tell you, they have done a lot to keep me playing. Overall, that’s what’s important, and that is what we should be judging by — not some 10% bonus that can only be active 10% of the time — yearly, that’s about 1% experience gain. For me, that’s about the difference of playing one minute more per day. Is it really that big of a deal?

Just Keep Fishing…

Yay, I’ve been fishing again (still?). Anthony’s lost his lead basically by a lot. I’m currently in the lead by just about 800k experience. But yeah, rocktails, I’m level 93 now, hoping for 98 by RuneFest.

Once I have 98 fishing, i’ll have the supplies for 98 cooking too. After that though, I don’t know what I’ll do. :P

RuneFest

So, in case you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard yet, Jagex has just announced RUNEFEST 2011!!!.

As an active administrator for a RuneScape fansite, that means, I’ll have to go! Well, not really HAVE to go, but.. SHOULD go.. so yeah. :P

We’re planning out our event now, and if you happen to be going, SEE YOU THERE! :)

More Random Plugins

Well, first off, I’d like to say I’ve finally got calculators working, translated, and moved off of my personal blog and to Rslatinos.com where they belong!!! :D

So now you’ll just see other test plugins. Currently, it’s a test Podcast plugin (no, not for use here. Don’t get your hopes up. :P I’m not updating regularly enough as is.) and a RuneScape Item Database extension [[If you're interested in this, it'll be $5 when finished, no data included. :P ]]

Prepare for more plugins to pop up randomly though :P

Blogging Regularly.. so hard?

Yeah, I’m complaining about my inability to blog regularly.

No, it’s not because of a lack of trying. It’s mostly because this blog is a low priority. Hate to say it, but actual RuneSlayer stuff (which this blog is almost always about), ends up being more important. :P

So anyway, I accomplished two of my RuneSlayer goals today:

First was fixing task set guides. They decided they didn’t want to show up after a rename, so I started from scratch fixing them.

Second was finishing the Rocking Out quest guide. Almost two months it sat in the queue. Now it’s finally ready to publish!

Maybe now I can get to real business. :D

Testing a new extension

Hey guys :P

As you can see, I’m testing a new extension on here related to RuneScape calculators.

Please feel free to test it out, but it’ll be removed.. soonish. :D

Server Downtime

Heh, so the server went a little funky today.

About three hours of downtime, and the reasoning behind it was “Your server was not loading the module needed to load your network card.” Not quite sure if I believe it, since that seems more like a symptom of the problem rather than the actual problem, but whatever, I’m just glad the server is back online. :P

Singlehop.com has like the best support, especially since this problem was the middle of the night on a holiday weekend, and we still had our server online within 2 hours of the initial problem. I highly recommend them for great uptime, great support, and true customer service. :)

Still Fishing [After Months]

Well, I do have to say that Anthony and I are STILL racing to 99 fishing. Neither one of us has a signficant lead over the other though — we’ve stayed within 100k of each other over the past month, although Anthony gained about 700k above me at the start of Bonus XP Weekend. I had gained that back by Monday though :)

So, right now we’re both level 88 fishing, not quite halfway to 99, but we’re getting there. I figured overall this would be a one or two month thing, but so far, going at 7 months and counting. Wow! My estimates were way off.

Git

So, recently, RuneSlayer [Okay, Anthony and I] has decided that it’s time to seriously consider versioning control.

We’ve decided on Git basically, and I’ve made Anthony spend the past two days installing it :) Now time to start configuring it.

And for those of you that don’t think versioning control is that important, that’s because it’s not. :) We’ve always had our codebase distributed in the most current version on our server, on my computer, and on a dvd AT MINIMUM, with most of the time a copy on Anthony’s and Brandon’s computers as well. If something broke, one of us could normally restore it.

If you don’t have at least 5 copies of your site in physically separate locations, consider doing so. And versioning control? DO NOT consider it a backup solution. Consider it, rather, a way to fix mistakes. Most importantly: BACK UP YOUR VERSIONING SYSTEM. :)

Long time, No post.

Yeah, it’s been awhile since I posted here, but I swear I’m not dead!

Basically, I’ve been working on Network sites — since RuneSlayer has grown so much :)

We’ve taken over PlanetStellar and LegendsHQ, and are now merging them in, as well as Runite.net. We’ve been drafting new content, working on new databases, recruting new staff, and making new tools. Overall, everything has grown.

However, not all is so good. Inactivity has struck on most sites, and while RuneSlayer is growing in activity, every other project is declining. We’ve having to focus more and more work just to keep up current activity levels, and less and less is getting done, starting a downward spiral.
We’ll get there, eventually, but I want platinum on ALL games :D
